Day At The Museum: This Summer’s Best Fashion Exhibits

The Dina Mackney team loves all things beautiful and the art world is one that never disappoints! While there are plenty of exhibits that are sure to delight as the summer comes to a close, we’ve tapped Margaret (our Director of Sales and Marketing) to share her experiences at two of this season’s biggest shows: Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style and Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In Between. Both of these shows highlight two of the most influential designers in the history of fashion, merging the worlds of fashion and art beautifully. Read on to hear Margaret’s thoughts on both along with a few style tips from me!

Rei KawakuboComme des Garçons- Art of the In Between

Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In Between

“One of the most highly anticipated shows of the season, this retrospective of Kawakubo’s designs for her label Comme des Garçons is a masterpiece in itself. It’s held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which has become known for its annual fashion exhibits held every spring; it’s arrival is signaled by the infamous Met Gala. Kawakubo is the second living designer the museum has honored with an exhibit of this magnitude (the first, ironically, being Yves Saint Laurent.) The show is worth seeing because it challenges our views of what fashion can be. Kawakubo’ work has always been non-conforming and this show highlights that point in a spectacular way.”

Tip: After viewing the show, head to the rooftop of the Met to enjoy a cool drink and take in the stunning views of Central Park (try to make sense of all that art you just took in!) While you’re there, head back in to the museum to see another great fashion exhibit celebrating famed photographer Irving Penn: Irving Penn Centennial.

Yves Saint Laurent: The Perfection of Style

“This traveling exhibit is a true show stopper. It’s everything you could ask for in a fashion exhibit: rich history, beautiful pieces on display, and pure STYLE! The glamour of a Yves Saint Laurent design is unmatched; just take a look at the splendid gowns to see for yourself! Besides the clothes, there are two other details that make this exhibit great: its interactive nature and the vintage jewelry on display. Viewers are encouraged to sketch fashion designs of their own in a handy notebook provided by the VMFA. Be inspired by the YSL himself and complimentary works of art from the VMFA’s personal collection. If sketching isn’t your thing, simply enjoy the stunning YSL jewels that compliment the fashion.”

Tip: Enjoy cocktails and dinner at the museum’s restaurant, Amuse, during your stay in Richmond. Then walk around the sculpture garden behind the museum to see more brilliantly bold public art pieces. And as with any popular exhibit, try to visit during the weekday to avoid long lines!

As you’re getting ready for your day at the museum, be sure to dress smart! You’ll be doing a lot of walking, so pair your most comfortable outfit with standout jewels for a look that is as practical as it is chic! For a museum trip, try wearing the Dina Mackney Citrine and Quartz Toggle Bracelet, Mixed Metal Chain, or White Agate Teardrop Pendant. Each of these pieces mixes classic design with modern lines via 18K gold vermeil that will blend perfectly with the art on view!

Are there any exhibits you’re looking forward to seeing before the end of summer? Share them with me (along with how you plan to wear your Dina Mackney jewels to them!) by using the #dinamackney tag on all social media platforms. Here’s to an art filled August!
